5 Signs You Need New Rotors

May 31, 2023

One of your vehicle's most important systems is the brakes. The brakes play an important role in ensuring your safety while driving, and the brake rotors are a vital component of this exact system. Rotors can become worn or damaged over time, reducing their overall performance. Here are five signs that your rotors need to be replaced:

#1 Vibration Or Pulsation When Braking

If you feel your steering wheel or brake pedal shaking or pulsating when you use the brakes, it may indicate that your rotors are warped or uneven. This can happen due to overheating or prolonged wear and tear. If this occurs, it's essential to have your rotors checked as soon as possible to avoid further damage.

#2 Unusual Noises When Braking

Squeaking, grinding, or other strange noises when braking can be a sign that your rotors are worn down or extremely damaged. The noise may occur due to metal-to-metal contact between the brake pads and rotors, which can be dangerous and result in a more expensive repair if not addressed quickly.

#3 Longer Braking Distance

If your vehicle's braking distance has increased, it may be due to worn or damaged rotors. This can be very dangerous, particularly in emergency braking scenarios. If you notice a delay in stopping or the need for more force on the brake pedal, have your rotors checked ASAP.

#4 Visible Damage Or Wear

It's always a good idea to inspect your brakes regularly for visible damage or wear. Look for any cracks, deep scoring, or other unusual things on the surface of the rotor. Also, inspect the thickness of the rotor, as a thin rotor can be an indication that it's time for a replacement.

#5 Dashboard Warning Light

Many modern vehicles have a brake warning light that will illuminate when there's an issue with the braking system. If this light appears, it's essential to take your vehicle to a mechanic to determine the exact issue. In some cases, it may be a problem with the brake rotors, so make sure to check up on them.
